In collaboration with the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), the new feature is anticipated to increase direct access to recall information.

In an August 20, 2025, press release (1), cannabis retail technology company Metrc announced a new feature to its Metrc Retail ID technology in California that would allow for direct access to recall notifications for consumers. Working in collaboration with the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), the feature is intended to support safety and transparency in the industry. Retail ID technology had been introduced in California in late 2024, and reportedly about 20% of product volume per week in California is identified using it. The system is designed to support supply chains, compliance, inventory processes, as well as enhance consumer engagement.

“By pairing recall notifications with Retail ID™, California is making it easier than ever for consumers to get instant, verified information about the safety, testing and legitimacy of their products,” stated Nicole Elliott, DCC, in the press release. “This is more than a public health safeguard; it’s about setting a new standard for transparency that others can follow. Businesses embracing this technology are advancing consumer safety, building trust, and demonstrating the forward-thinking values that have long defined California’s leadership in this space.”

Using the new technology, customers can scan the QR code on a package to see if the product has been recalled. This also confirms that the product is part of the legal cannabis industry.

Customers also have access to laboratory results and product information, increasing cannabis safety and business trustworthiness while also giving customers important information to make decisions, explained Michael Johnson, CEO of Metrc.

Metrc had made other collaborative partnerships earlier this month. On August 5, Metrc announced (2) a strategic partnership with cannabis technology company BioTrack. Present in 38 states, the platform aims to support compliance, inventory tracking, and offers a point-of-sale system. BT Government, Inc. manages BioTrack’s government-facing operations, though it functions independently of both Metrc and BioTrack. With the partnership, Metrc will continue the delivery of regulatory technology to state partners and BioTrack will increase its focus on enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems point of sale (POS) systems.

“We’re excited to partner with Metrc to deliver robust compliance solutions to state regulators,” stated Moe Afaneh, General Manager of BT Government, in the press release. “At the same time, BioTrack is doubling down on its commercial offerings, bringing new innovations to ERP and POS systems that empower cannabis businesses to thrive.”

Metrc also features lab shopping prevention and product verification. The new partnership is anticipated to increase innovation, consistency, and transparency in the industry.
