Event Overview:

In the rapidly evolving landscape of cannabis production and consumption, ensuring the safety and quality of cannabis products is of paramount importance. Microbial contaminants pose potential health risks to cannabis consumers, necessitating robust testing procedures. This presentation will first introduce the fundamental concepts of cannabis microbiology, emphasizing the significance of accurate and reliable testing methodologies. Secondly, we will break down traditional culture-based techniques utilizing specialized growth media to detect and quantify microbial contaminants while comparing molecular methods that include rapid detection and the ability to differentiate between viable and non-viable microorganisms.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Real world applications of media and molecular based techniques in the cannabis industry.
  • Media vs molecular based microbiology testing from a technical standpoint
  • What quality control needs to be added to ensure valid microbiology results

Who Should Attend:

  • Compliance laboratories, scientists, cultivators, and production facilities

Speaker:

Anthony Repay, M.S.
Laboratory Director
Method testing labs Tampa, Fl

Anthony Repay is currently serving as Laboratory Director of Method Testing Laboratories in Tampa, FL. Following a Master’s of Science in microbiology from Purdue University, Anthony started his career as the head food and environmental microbiologist at a Chicago based testing laboratory. After several years at this location and an opportunity arose to join the cannabis science community. Since joining cannabis, Anthony has tried to innovate and push the cannabis microbiology community by publishing peer reviewed papers and aiding in method development through AOAC Research institute. Through AOAC, Anthony currently sits on the Cannabis analytical science program’s expert review panel in microbiology and oversees method development at Florida’s only AOAC accredited research institute.
